The different types of fragrances have been developed by Michael Edwards who is a fragrance expert. He created the fragrance wheel, which is an internationally recognized classification system which breaks the fragrance scent into four major groups. These include floral, oriental, woody and fresh notes, which are further broken down into twelve families.

They are as follows:

  •         Citrus: This kind of fragrance is made from lemons, oranges and grapefruit. The oils give scents to these fragrances that are tangy and flavorful. These types of fragrances are sharp and formal.
  •         Fruity: These perfumes are widely used by many women. They have that fruity touch that includes scents of lemon, orange and grapefruit. They are made from other fruits also which include apple, raspberry and cherry. Leading brands in this category include Fresh Sugar and Acqua di Parma Colonia.
  •          Water: Fragrances in the Water Family offer an aromatic scent of sea breezes and the aroma of fresh air. This fragrance is soft, fresh, and clean.
  •          Floral: These are the most popular in the fragrance family. They range from the scent of a single flower to combinations of mixed flowers. Floral fragrances are usually very soft
